Decks for a Gasification Plant

In early 2013, we were contacted by Grunau Company for a structural steel project they had for the Dakota Gasification Company in North Dakota. This particular plant used coal to process natural gas, as well as producing chemicals and fertilizers. Furthermore, the production of these types of products can be harsh and corrode regular carbon or coated steel structures in the plant. Grunau was tasked with building new centrifuge and compaction decks for the plant out of a material that would last. The choice of which material to use was the easy part, as they decided on 316/L stainless steel for its increased corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. So the next step, which they thought would be a challenge, was finding stainless steel structural shapes in very large sizes. Fortunately, Grunau discovered Stainless Structurals America and together we could meet the challenge easily.

Big Stainless Steel Beams, A Company First

A very unique aspect of this job were the sizes of stainless steel beams the construction of these decks required. The project called for both 30 inch and 36 inch wide flange beams in over 30 feet lengths. With our size range and also our laser fused production methods, we were able to produce these beams at our plant in Stabio, Switzerland. And what is so outstanding of this job, you might ask. These stainless steel beams were the largest beams we had produced for a job in North America so far. Overall, the job included a variety of our other custom and stock sizes of stainless steel beams, channels, and angles. In total, we shipped over 330,000 pounds for this job.

Stainless Structurals: The only Choice!

By choosing stainless steel for this structural work, the contractors and engineers are committing to designing and building structures that will sustain and last through both corrosive, as well as harsh environments. For this particular plant the original carbon structures did not even last twenty years. However, these new stainless steel decks will last much longer and the life cycle cost benefits are huge. Stainless Structurals is your only choice for large beams like this, because we are committed to helping you make your design, no matter the shape or size, a reality.
